Stewards were notified on Thursday 1st February 2024 that a sprinkler had burst near the 1000m in the chute and as a result this section of the track was significantly softer than the remainder of the track and ultimately deemed unsuitable for racing. Acting under the provisions of AR21, Stewards authorised the following distance changes for:
Race 1 Was 2308m. Amended to 2250m.
Race 2 Was 1008m. Amended to 950m.

Seccombe explained that after settling outside the leader through the early stages of the event, he noticed Popeye The Sailor which was racing to his inside was close to the heels of the leader. He added after initially maintaining his position outside the lead despite Popeye The Sailor racing close to heels to his inside, the tempo of the race then slackened and as Popeye The Sailor continued to race close to the heels of both Chestnut Thunder and Continuation, he held safety concerns for that runner to his inside. Stewards noted his comments.

Rider M Morris stated from the 600m it had been her intention to shift out to improve, however in her opinion the runners to her outside would not take her into the race and she would have been obliged to cover additional ground, so she elected to maintain her position to the inside until shifting out near the 250m.

Woody Wildcat Performed below market expectations. Rider G Seccombe could offer no explanation for the performance. A post race Veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities however it was noted it cast its near fore plate in running.

Saturn Isle Slow to begin.
Low Level Flying Over raced in the early stages getting its head up and near the 900m shifted out making contact with Kiss In Spring.
Kiss In Spring Became unbalanced near the 900m when bumped outwards by Low Level Flying which when over racing shifted out. Prior to correct weight, rider R Kirkpatrick viewed the film before deciding not to lodge an objection.
Rider R Kirkpatrick pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR 132(7)(a)(ii), in that he used his whip 9 times prior to the 100m, which is 4 more than permitted. R Kirkpatrick had his license to ride in races suspended for a period of 1 picnic meeting, with the period to commence on midnight Sunday 7 January 2024 and to expire on midnight Saturday 13 January 2024. Accordingly, R Kirkpatrick will be able to return to ride on Sunday 14 January 2024. Montalbano Tactics queried. Stewards questioned rider T Johnson as to the tactics adopted on the gelding which raced in the lead together with Start of a Journey by a considerable margin on the rest of the field. She stated that she had been instructed to ride the gelding in a manner similar to last years Merton Cup where it had travelled on pace at a comfortably strong tempo. She added she was attempting to ride to these instructions when passing the winning post on the first occasion after being outside the leader Start of a Journey, she continued to stride forward to the outright lead. She added the gelding failed to respond when paced under pressure and was disappointing with the stable indicating that it may now be retired. Stewards noted her comments however advised T Johnson that in their opinion she erred in not electing to either maintain her position or even ease passing the winning post on the first occasion, rather than increase the speed of the event which they felt was unsustainable.
Start of a Journey Eased down over the final 400m. When questioned as to the tactics adopted, rider R Kirkpatrick reported that the mare over raced considerably in the early stages and set a stronger tempo than he would have preferred. He added he was unable to settle the mare through the early stages and this was made more difficult when challenged in the lead passing the winning post on the first occasion. When questioned as to whether there was an opportunity to restrain passing the 1100m when Montalbano strode forward of his mount he reported that he was wary of that runner shifting down towards the rail and tried to hold the position to its inside. Stewards advised R Kirkpatrick that in their view he would have been better placed allowing that runner to cross in an attempt to give his mount some respite after leading at such a strong tempo in the early stages. R Kirkpatrick further stated that the mare had been agitated pre race and that the stable would monitor it in the coming days and advise Stewards of anything which may come to light which may explain the performance.

Race 6 yarck hotel trophy Race (1) - 1600 metres:
Ambusher Underwent a pre race Veterinary examination after sustaining a minor laceration to the near side shoulder en route and was passed fit to start.

After taking evidence from both riders, it was established that approaching the 200m Smart Charge attempted to improve to the inside of Calypso Rich where there was not quite a full run and as a result made contact with Calypso Rich on two occasions with that gelding becoming unbalanced. Stewards, taking into account the manner in which both horses finished the race off, the beaten margin and the degree of interference, could not be comfortably satisfied that had the incident not taken place that Calypso Rich would have finished in front of Smart Charge and therefore dismissed the objection.

Prior to correct weight Tyson Barton, rider of War Of Wisdom that was officially placed second by the Judge lodged an objection against Lady Zoffany being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference over the final 100m. Stewards, bearing in mind the 1.25 length margin, the proximity to the winning post and the manner in which the runners finished the race off, could not be comfortably satisfied that had the interference not taken place that War Of Wisdom would have finished in front of Lady Zoffany and therefore dismissed the objection. Correct weight was subsequently declared on the Judges placings.

Henry Jaggard had his licence to ride in races suspended for a total of 2 picnic race meetings, with the period to commence on Sunday 3 December 2023 and expire on Sunday 10 December 2023.
