Zou Zou For You Slow to begin. Near the 400 metres was held up for clear running before shifting wider on the track to obtain running. When questioned in relation to the tactics adopted on the mare today, rider J Virgona reported that he had been instructed to attempt to settle the mare and ride it in a position with cover as connections were mindful that the mare only possessed a short turn of foot. J Virgona further stated that the mare began well and that in the straight on the first occasion he was able to find a position midfield with cover, which was closer than he had anticipated. He added that in the early and middle stages he was mindful that the runners in front had set what he believed was a quick tempo and for this reason he did not urge his mount forward to maintain contact with these runners. Further to this, near the 800 metres he was reluctant to place the mare under pressure to urge it forward because he was of the opinion that this would be detrimental to the mares chances and as such he continued to allow it to travel where it was comfortable. J Virgona added that near the 600 metres when Caveman improved around him, continued to allow the mare to travel before he then commenced to place the mare under pressure to which it responded well from the 400 metres. He added that in retrospect from the 800 metres he should have allowed the mare to stride forward in an attempt to put his mount closer to the runners in front of him and that near the 600 metres when Caveman raced to his outside he should have placed his mount under pressure sooner than which he did to afford his mount the best opportunity to improve into the race. Trainer J Bridgeman confirmed the instructions issued to rider J Virgona. Stewards noted his comments and agreed with his assessment however notified J Virgona that in future he would be expected to ride all his mounts in a manner that left no room for query. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Rider L Taylor reported that near the 300 metres the gelding put in several awkward strides at which point his saddle slipped back placing him at a disadvantage and for this reason he eased the gelding down from this point.

Other Comments / Explanations:
It was noted that todays racebook included the second page of the race 4 field inserted after race 2. Patrons were alerted by the broadcast on numerous occasions to avoid confusion.
After persistent showers during the early races, Stewards downgraded the track to a soft (6) after Race 3, particularly in relation to several areas of the track which had softened, despite much of the track remaining reasonably firm.
With recent installation of new plastic running rail, red painting of the final 100 metres of the inside running rail was incomplete, and further attempts to complete this work were thwarted by wet weather. As a result, red tape was installed at the 100 metre mark and along the top of the rail from that point, which while visible to riders and Stewards, was difficult to detect when viewing film footage of the race.
Race 1 lister family maiden plate - 1150 metres:
Bimmies Twin Jumped away awkwardly, and then raced wide in the early stages of the race.
Surely Nobel In the middle stages of the race had a tendency to lay out, and as a result raced wider on the track.
Calypso Rich Hampered just prior to the winning post when Surely Nobel shifted in slightly.
Race 2 OAKDALE MEAT CO Trophy race (2) - 1150 metres:

Rokurokubi After being loaded in the starting stalls, became caught in an awkward position for some time and had to be removed by barrier staff. Rokurokubi was withdrawn from the race on veterinary advice at 2.57pm. Stewards ordered the following under the provisions of Rule 4.3.2(a)(ii)(C): All monies bet for a win and/or place and concession betting on the late scratching to be refunded. All successful bets on horses prior to time of withdrawal are subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket: Win Bets 57 cents, Place Bets (For Winner) 38 cents, Place Bets (For 2nd) - 38 cents. *All monies bet after the Stewards declaration of withdrawal to be paid at face value of ticket. Due to the large deductions, small field and variation in prices with bookmakers, the Bookmakers Supervisor consulted with bookmakers to ensure that under the provisions of Rule 4.3.6(a) punters were not returned an amount less than their original stake.
A considerable time after the race, Rokurokubi was again examined by RVs Veterinary Surgeon who reported that the mare had sustained no injuries as a result of the incident.
As a result of this incident the start of the race was considerably delayed.
Minnas Girl Stood in the starting stalls next to Rokurokubi, and after the event which led to that mares withdrawal, was removed from the stalls and examined by RVs veterinary surgeon prior to being declared fit to race. Had a tendency to overrace in the early and middle stages, and near the 700 metres was steadied off the heels of Stormus, and shifted out slightly, resulting in Hurricane Jack being taken out wider on the track. Was again steadied near the 600 metres when overracing.
Race 3 TAC BE RACES READY TROPHY RACE- 1150 metres:
Royal Roulette Raced wide throughout. Raced ungenerously when taking the turn near the 700 metres.

Race 4 MALCOM LUGG MEMORIAL trophy race (1) - 1600 metres:
All Brown Slow to begin.
So I Am Rider Tim Grace stated to Stewards that after beginning extremely well from the outside gate, he elected to go forward to take advantage of the good start, aware that the gelding had previously raced in a forward position particularly at picnics, whereas in higher class races the gelding tended to settle further back.

Race 5 elders merton cup - 1900 metres:
Another Prince Jumped away awkwardly.
Cheners When attempting to improve near the 400 metres, had to be steadied when attempting to take a neat run to the inside of Johnny Romance (Grant Seccombe) which shifted in slightly when struck with the whip. Grant Seccombe was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances in future. Beaten favourite rider Shaun Cooper stated that he lost momentum when trying to put the gelding into the race near the 400 metres, but from that point struggled to quicken after the leader and eventual winner had strung the field out.

Race 6 merton traders open trophy race - 1600 metres:
Captain Kittinger Slow to begin. Performed poorly. Rider Grant Seccombe stated that after starting slowly, the gelding lost its footing slightly turning out of the straight the first time, and from that point felt uncomfortable in the going, but nonetheless he was disappointed that the gelding had been uncompetitive. An examination by RVs veterinary Surgeon subsequent to the race found no obvious abnormalities. Trainer Troy Kilgower was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding in respect to its lack of competitiveness, and should it perform in a similar manner further action may be taken.
King Valour Raced tightly on the inside of Dynamic Moss when turning out of the straight the first time, and at that point may have slightly lost its footing resulting in rider Leigh Taylor becoming momentarily unbalanced.
