Race 1 BETEASY TROPHY RACE (1) HANDICAP -1600 metres:

Can Get A Witness Fractious in the barriers. An inquiry was held with rider S Cooper regarding Can Get A Witness, and in particular with the mare losing touch with the field between the 1000m to the 400m. S Cooper reported that having ridden the mare before, he was reluctant to bustle the mare in the early stages when beaten for speed, and as a result settled at the rear of the field. He further added that he didnt want to place her under pressure too early in the race. S Cooper urged his mount along from approaching the 400m however agreed in hindsight that he should have made more effort to maintain contact with the field well in advance of this. Trainer D Dwyer was queried regarding the tactics for the mare and reported that no specific instructions were given, and he was disappointed that the mare got so far back in the run, however acknowledged that S Cooper is an inexperienced rider. Stewards were of the opinion that S Cooper erred in failing to make a greater effort to urge his mount more vigorously during the aforementioned period, and believed his ride lacked judgement on this occasion. Stewards were mindful that S Cooper is inexperienced with less than 50 rides in total and therefore felt the appropriate course of action was to refer him to the Rider Skills Panel and Picnic Riders Mentor for review of the ride and coaching going forward.
