Perfect sunshine greeted picnic racegoers on Saturday as Alexandra once again played host to the opening race meeting of the season. With a great crowd in attendance, there was no shortage of entertainment on the track with six bumper races producing a pair of first-time winners in the saddle.
Maxwell Keenan brought up his maiden victory in the second, accomplishing the feat in his first ride at the picnics. After a nervous start, Keenan steeled himself with a brilliant ride on Piper’s Wait, sweeping to victory by half-a-length. While in the last, Natasha Baxter matched Keenan’s efforts with a powerful win on board seven-year-old mare Del Mishel, notching up her first winner at the picnics.
In perhaps a sign of things to come, Courtney Pace and Jacob Londregan fought out the finish in the first with Londregan celebrating his return to the picnics with a fighting win on board Jill’s Generosity.
While in the third, Craig Kirkpatrick showed his experience with a powerful and sustained run on favourite Typhoon Tyson. Sitting just off the pace, Kirkpatrick began his charge well from home, hitting the front within sight of the line before pulling away to record a half-length victory. Melissa Nicholls took the reins of six-year-old-mare Ruby’s Wu in the fourth, dominating out in front to salute ahead of the fast-finishing Master Luca. While in the fifth, four-year-old mare Mozart’s Dream, ridden superbly by Ashlee Beer, stormed home along the fence to record a three-quarter-length victory ahead of favourite Hammering Home.
Results for Alexandra.
Next Saturday, picnic racing heads to Healesville for the traditional Derby Day meeting. It’s set to be another cracking day out at the picnics. We can’t wait to see you there!
