Swifts Creek Report

The 2013/14 Picnic Racing season came to a close on Easter Sunday at the picturesque Swifts Creek racecourse. A big crowd turned out for the event and the weather was fine with sunny breaks and the track rating a good 3.

Race one was won by Aurelii who had disappointed when favourite at its previous Healesville run but with the extra run under the belt and dropping back to 1000m the $1-80 favourite opened up the account for punters winning easily by 2.25L to give jockey Michael Kent the first of a riding treble.

Theme Songs after being trapped wide all the way powered home to take out the second race in a photo from the favourite Jisubani. Going a bit wide on the final turn nearly cost it the race as Jisubani railed around the turn like a greyhound saving valuable ground but Michael Kent under strong riding just got the 7yog up on the line.

The third race was another tight affair with Deanoss and Chadra Boy going to the line locked together requring the photo finish to decide the winner. Even the technology could not separate them and we had a deadheat between the two equal $3-20 second favourites. The $1-65 favourite Swiss Flyer could not get into the race and finished 1.3L from the winners running 4th.

The 2014 Swifts Creek Cup saw a perfect riding exhibiton by Angela Bence who settled Parvenu on the fence behind the pacemakers Primo Lago and Phantom Flight. With only 63.5kg she kicked clear on the turn and the in form Manning pair of Shanghai Rooster and Guadalcanal could not pick up the winner in the run to the line.

The short priced favourite King Henry at $1-40 easily took out the fifth race from Swiss Flyer who backed up from an earlier run in race 1 for a gallant second. King Henry provided Michael Kent a treble for the day and his father a training double.

The final event was won by Theia ridden by Grant Seccombe and trained by John Kilgower who until this race had not had much luck. Well ridden by Grant Seccombe on the fence behind the pace the 6yom powered home to win easily by 3L and notch its third win for the season.

That ends another successful year of picnic racing with crowd attendances very strong throughout the season which was helped by relatively good weather throughout the year. Once again, a big thankyou to all the volunteer race club committees and helpers who work tirelessly behind the scenes without a lot of recognition.

Next season starts off with a different format as Alexandra host a meeting on Cox Plate Day which promises to be a good opener. Hope you can all make it for what promises to be a great event.
