Dederang, Alexandra & Woolamai Reports
by Brad Best

With three meetings squeezed into the space of two days, it was a massive weekend of picnic racing. Huge crowds attended each venue with many families making the most of the summer holidays, flocking to racetracks around Victoria for a day out at the picnics.

On Saturday, Dederang Race Club hosted their only meeting of the year with the feature event, the Dederang Cup, taken out by nine-year-old gelding He’s An Angel. Appearing at the picnics for the first time, the Brian Cox-trained son of Jeune proved too strong for the seven-horse field, winning by a comprehensive five lengths. The victory was especially sweet for jockey Amber Comb who rode an amazing four winners on the day, her own personal quaddie including another win for Brian Cox in the fourth on board Polish Rose; a dominant victory on Shivoo in the last for trainer James Fraser; and, following a late scratching to Hemingway Plume in the first, a walkover on Better Leta. In other races, Estambul Or Bust, ridden by Jack Peat, continued her good form in the second, winning by a length over Rocky’n’bullwinkle; while in race three, Paddy Kelly rode Deni Flyer to victory for trainer Jim Scott.

On the same afternoon, Alexandra Racing Club hosted their first meeting for the season. Despite all six races featuring fields of four or fewer runners, it was a highly competitive day of racing. In front of a large crowd, apprentice jockey Reece Goodwin rode a double, taking out the third on board Combien and backing up a race later on Safa Park Girl. In race one, Stephanie Dorning kick-started the day on board Dizzy Belle, winning by five lengths. Clayton Douglas and Kachow teamed up in the second for a three-quarters-of-a-length victory over Touch Of Burst; while in the fifth, Nine Mile Sniper, with veteran jockey Adam Bodey in the saddle, made it three wins from three starts, beating home Miss Dynamite in the closest finish of the day.

As bookmakers licked their wounds, the streak of favourites finally ended in the last with $6 outsider Broken Jaw, ridden by talented apprentice Michael Kent, getting up for trainer Ern Ewert Jnr.
On a squally Sunday afternoon, picnic racing returned to Woolamai for the first time in 2014. Despite the windy conditions, a large crowd turned out, lining the Woolamai straight to cheer on their favourites.

On the track, it was a day to savour for Matthew Brown, the young apprentice riding a fantastic treble from his book of five rides. In race one, Brown hit the front early on board six-year-old gelding Argentinian Storm, holding on gamely to defeat Note Shredder by a nose. He didn’t have to wait long for his second win, easily taking out race two on the highly-fancied Drunken Master. He brought up his treble in race four, timing his run to perfection on five-year-old mare Mrs Bean in one of the best finishes of the day. Adam Bodey made his usual appearance in the winner’s stall in race three, guiding $1.90 favourite Bertoglio to victory in classical fashion; while in race five, Clay Beasy took the reins of Road To Summer, dominating the race to win by two-and-three-quarter lengths.

And as the rain set in for the last, Courtney Pace, on board five-year-old gelding Shanghai Rooster, finished off a marathon weekend of picnic racing in style, gliding to the line to record a two-and-a-quarter-length win for trainer Reg Manning.
