Brilliant sunshine greeted racegoers on Saturday as picnic racing made its return to Yea for the first time in the 2013/14 season. With a gentle incline down to the straight and easy access to the mounting yard and finishing post, Yea is undoubtedly the most spectator-friendly venue on the picnic racing circuit. The Yea Racing Club always put on a great show, combining top-class racing with activities off the track for both kids and kids at heart.
Riding honours were shared on the day with six different jockeys winning each of the six races. Monde Motch, the rank outsider in a field of five, took out race one ahead of favourite Bah Hum Bug. In a dominant on-pace performance, the cool head of Clayton Douglas guided the seven-year-old gelding from start to finish to secure a 2.75-length victory for trainer Neil Robb. It was a similar story in the second with Wait Forette pulling away in the straight to record another victory for the successful combination of Stephanie Dorning and Kim & Gayle Mayberry. In race three, Reece Goodwin proved too strong on board Safa Park Girl, storming home out wide to defeat Dukedom by 1.75 lengths.
