The consistent Purge had a big weekend winning on both Saturday at Healesville and then following up today at Balnarring. Well trained by Rodney Hammond this horse has been a model of consistency throughout the season winning six races which included the Pakenham Cup, Healesville Cup, Hinnomunjie Cup and today the Picnic Racing Middle Distance Series Final.

Well ridden by Shane McGovern, Purge swept to the lead over Ancient Faeroe on turning for home and won well at $3-00.

Today marked the end of the 2008/09 Picnic Racing season and by all reports crowds were up significantly this season which seems to have come from the support of picnic racing patrons when signalled by Racing Victoria that it may lose a number of meetings and venues. Congratulations once again go to the many volunteers who operate these clubs and put in countless hours to make them a success for patrons and their communities.

The final event for the season will be the Picnic Racing Awards Night, details of the date and venue will be posted when available.

Hope you had some luck on the punt throughout the season,

Peter Bon

Balnarring has certainly come a long way since December 1897 as depicted in the photo from the University of Melbourne Archives.

It was a good days racing at Healesville where the consistent Scold who had previously won 7 from 7 picnic starts just failed in a photo to win. Carrying the huge impost of 75.5kg, Scold at $4-40 got to the lead after turning for home but the leader Dantickle at $7-00 with only 63.5kg fought back in the straight to win in a photo.

The winners were shared by six different jockeys on the day with the two leading jockeys Adam Bodey and Kane Harris failing to ride a winner.

Tomorrow at Balnarring is the last picnic meeting of the season and unlike last year when the jockeys premiership went down to the last race of the season Adam Bodey is ten clear on 48 winners from Kane Harris. The trainers premiership is also all sewn up by Anthony Bolden who has trained 12 winners for the season and is four clear of Neil Robb.
