Report Woolamai 24th & Balnarring 26th January 2009
With perfect weather for both Woolamai and Balnarring there were huge crowds in attendance at both venues. Despite all the gloom and doom about the economy people do place a priority on having a good time and picnic racing continues to prove its popularity with the general public. At Woolamai the highlight of the day was Kane Harris riding a treble to help him close the gap in the jockeys premiership between himself and Adam Bodey.

At Balnarring we saw a repeat performance of a couple of years ago when Kelvin Bourke trained Esceegee to win both the Dederang Cup and the Balnarring Cup. This time it was Roy's Legacy who won the Dederang Cup and made it a double today lugging the huge weight of 74kg to win the Balnarring Cup at $1-90 favourite. Interestingly Esceegee went on the following year to run second in both Cups, with the weight penalties for the two Cups catching up with the horse. Will Roy's Legacy follow the same path and we will see him next year ?

For the people that believe picnic racing is not of value to the racing industry perhaps a survey amongst the many racegoers seen below at Balnarring on Australia Day could help in their education.

Next week we return to Yea, probably the most patron friendly venue with respect to viewing of the races along with plenty of space to setup for a picnic. Hope to see you there.

Good luck on the punt,

Peter Bon
