Report for Healesville 22nd March 2008
The Healesville Cup day brought a close to the season for the Healesville race club and what a great day of racing on a perfect day weather wise. The Minister for Racing, Rob Hulls attended with his family to enjoy what he so aptly described when presenting the Cup trophy as Picnic Racing being "grassroots racing". Picnic Racing presents such a relaxed atmosphere on days like this and to spend time with family and friends whilst at the same time being entertained by Picnic Racing, well it does not get much better. The Harris and Bodey show continued with Kane riding four winners again and Adam snagging two, both times beating Kane and relegating him to 2nd place.

Minister Hulls enjoys the "Grassroots of Racing" and presents the Healesville Cup to winning connections.

The first event went to Oscar's Revenge (Kane Harris) who despite drifting in the betting from $3-00 to $6-00 went to the front and led all the way to win from the favourite Sentimental Ash (Adam Bodey).

Race 2 was another Bodey - Harris quinella with Wintaker at $3.20 coming home strongly over the top of the short priced $1.70 favourite Lucky Petric to win. Wintaker had run a strong race first up when it did not get away and settled well back before making a run out wide to run third. With a change to leading jockey Adam Bodey and a run under its belt it stayed a bit more in touch today and was too strong for Lucky Petric who clearly found the task of carrying 71.5kg too onerous.

Race 3 was dominated in the betting by Badger's Retreat at $2.20 and Ruling Interest at $3-00 with the rest of the field $8-00 or better. The race turned out as per the betting with the favourite appreciating the return to 2350m where it came home strongly over the top of Ruling Interest to win well and give Kane Harris a double.

The Healesville Cup was an open affair in the betting with many chances but punters sorted them out by installing Toro as the $4-00 favourite by the time racing began. Once again they were correct and with the help of Kane Harris, Toro stormed home to win on the line from Purge $8-00 who looked the winner when turning for home.

Race 5 was on paper a tricky race with most of the runners having ordinary form records and Turning Yallah was installed as the $2-50 favourite.

Trapped three wide early the horse could not get to the lead and its customary role and was therefore in trouble from the outset. Once again, Kane Harris rode a terrific race on Shock Tactics at $3-20 and railed on the turn to hit the front. Half way down the straight Tidal Spirit looked to have the upper hand before Shock Tactics fought back strongly to get up on the line giving Kane Harris his fourth winner.

The final event was a good betting race with Like Thunder, Rickitic and Xaarsky all well supported in the betting. Rickitic, with Kane Harris aboard appeared to have the race sewn up when Like Thunder came home strongly down the outside to win at $3-50.

Report for Balnarring 24th March 2008
The race for the jockeys premiership was the highlight of the afternoon as we went into the meeting with Kane Harris on 45 winners, four ahead of Adam Bodey. At the end of the days racing the premiership was all tied up with both riders on 45. Adam had a hot day winning four with Kane not managing to find a winner today. With the last meeting of the season next week at Alexandra it looks like we will not only have the horses celebrating wins.

The first race of the day went to the Rob Carmichael trained first starter Just Jordie at $5-00. Not great away from the barrier the 4yog settled at the rear of the field and was under hard riding by Shane McGovern at the 400m but went around them on the turn and came home strongly to win from Tiponelly and the weakening Mary's Delight.

Woolamai Miss backed up from its run at Healesville on Saturday when 3rd in the final race to lead all the way and win in good style. With a significant jockey change to top jockey Adam Bodey the horse found a couple of extra lengths and won well at the good odds of $6-00 from the fast finishing Order of Victory.

Surface Claw who was having its first picnic race start won the third race at $5-00 providing Adam Bodey with an early double. Chloe Blue Eyes was sent out the short priced favourite at $1-80 and set up a good lead in front but shortly after turning for home Surface Claw cruised up to it on the outside and won easily.

Race 4 went to Eye Eye and was well backed late in the betting from $3-20 to equal $2-60 favourite. A 3yog who won at this track last start at the big odds of $12-00 this lightly raced horse improved further and won as it liked.

Race 5 went to the $2-80 favourite Sissano who was patiently ridden by Adam Bodey and fought a ding dong battle with Schumpeter all the way up the straight to win by a head making it a treble for the hoop.

The final event was a good betting affair with Cazza's Lottery sent out the $2-60 favourite after being solidy backed from $4-20. Adam Bodey showed great judgement not only pre race by electing to ride the $4-20 chance Chatter Brooke over Cazza's Lottery but also in the race itself.

Settling the horse to the rear and timing his run to perfection the Balnarring Cup winner got up on the line to defeat the favourite and make it a quadrella of winners and tie up the jockeys premiership.

Next Meeting

Alexandra Saturday 29th March 2008 Bagpipes and Brass Band at the Races
The final picnic race meeting at Alexandra and the last picnic race meeting for Racing Victoria 2008 season, will be held on Saturday 29th March at Alexandra.

The entire meeting will be sponsored by the O’Brien Family and by Tony Noonan Racing Stables. It promises to be a great day of racing and entertainment. In keeping with the Highland Fling theme for the day, lone piper Ian McMillan from the Hawthorn Pipe band, will be present to continue the high quality of musical entertainment always offered at the Alexandra races. In addition to Ian, the evergreen Alexandra Brass Band, who are always favourites at the races, will also be performing.

As well as the racing entertainment, the Alexandra Race Club conducts a raffle drawn on the day towards the end of the racing events. The prize of $500 means all tickets are usually sold prior to the draw.

As Saturday 29th March is the final meeting of the season, it is the trainers last chance to win the $500 Alexandra  Leading Trainer Award 2008. With only one meeting remaining, this award is still up for grabs. Trainers Adam Bodey and Kane Harris are tied in top place, with Charmaine Barnes close behind, setting up an exciting competition for the last meeting to determine the eventual winner. In the 2008 Alexandra Leading Rider Award, jockey Adam Bodey has edged in front of Kane Harris to be the front runner going into the final meeting.

So there will lots of action both on and off the track at the Highland Fling race meeting. Bring the family early and set up your favourite spot trackside or under the cool shady trees. BYO  supplies or indulge your family with the onsite offerings. Savour the beautiful wines from Fergusson’s Winery, enjoy a BBQ feast and beer from the Lions Club, the tempting afternoon tea available from Vivienne or a delicious treat from the ice cream van. Check out the race club’s website for details: www.alexandraraceclub.com.au

Please Note:
The proposed final meeting of the season at Pakenham on Saturday, April 12th has been abandoned due to the fact that Yarra Glen will be having their meeting transferred to Pakenham on April 19th and track usage is an issue. The final meeting for the Picnic Racing 2007-2008 season will be held at Alexandra on Saturday, March 29th 2008.
