Report for Buchan Saturday 16th February 2008
Special thanks to Ken Pitcher for supplying this weeks report and John Donovan for the Buchan photos which have been added to the Picture Gallery.

Delightful weather, a large crowd and country hospitality all made for a great days racing at Canni Creek for the annual Buchan race meeting.

Race one saw the hot favorite Ronrenza jump straight to the front and piloted by Ben Wade scored an easy victory to get punters off to a good start.

Scratchings in the 2nd event reduced the field to 3 runners with the popular runner Captain Cosmic, ridden by Courtney Pace, having to fight hard to run down Miss Gisborne and record his 20th career win.

The 3rd event proved to be the highlight of the day when a top class field of 7 contested heat 3 of the picnic middle distance series. The race was a thriller with 3 horses hitting the line locked together with the favorite, Warrigal Tom (Courtney Pace), showing bulldog courage to get up in the last stride to defeat the gallant Leica Reason with Bridges of Babylon flying for 3rd. The race time was a track record and Warrigal Tom made a certainty of winning the picnic horse of the year by recording his 8th win of the season, an amazing performance by both horse and trainer, Alec Manning.

A betting plunge went astray in the 4th event when Right Note, backed from $3 into $1.60, had the punters smiling half way down the straight, however their faces quickly changed from delight to dismay when Reddy For Kerry (Shane McGovern) charged down the outside to win running away in a most impressive performance.

Punters got it right in the Buchan Cup when Andamon (Kane Harris), who was backed from $2.40 into $1.80, led for most of the way to score a convincing victory over Kellybean and Miss Gisborne.

The final event saw Adam Bodey record his 1st win for the day when he lifted the short priced favorite, Diamond Lily, over the line to defeat Urban Gypsy who fought on tenaciously.

The leading rider award went to Courtney Pace, who rode a double, and she is certainly making her mark among the picnic riding ranks. 4 wins at Dederang earlier in the season showed she is more than capable.

Those who ventured to Buchan for the first time on Saturday will certainly be back again next year. Results and Picture Gallery for Buchan now available.
